James M. Skidmore

Welcome.

I’m Professor of German Studies at the University of Waterloo. I use this site to manage my work in online and open education, German studies, and other things. Have a look around, and get in touch if you’d like - happy to hear from you.

The Berlin Project

The Berlin Project is a grad seminar, a textbook for undergraduate courses on Berlin, and more. Written by students for students, it gathers together some introductory essays on some novels and films in which Berlin plays a central role.

Online Teaching and Learning

These ideas about teaching online courses provide some concrete information and examples about how almost any instructor can create a simple yet effective online course using only a computer and a university’s learning management system.

And if you’d like to have a look at some of my courses, go right ahead. You’ll find links to them here.

I’m Chair of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo. We offer a BA in German, a joint MA with Universität Mannheim (Germany) in Intercultural German Studies, and a PhD in German. We also teach courses in Croatian, Dutch, Russian, and Cultural Identities.

I’m Director of the Waterloo Centre for German Studies, a research institute at the University of Waterloo. WCGS supports research into all aspects of the German-speaking world, and is committed to publicly-oriented scholarship.
